- Augmented Reality (AR) in Education
Another interesting topic this week is the introduction of AR and its application in the field of education. From Professor Matt Bower’s presentation, I learned that AR has the potential to identify students’ needs that are not explicitly shown or expressed. It can also prompt useful and personalized teaching alerts with AR and the help of facial or voice recognition software (EON Reality, 2019).
The video below shows how AR can be a powerful tool in education and has the potential to transform student learning experience.
- Infographic hands-on Activity
This week’s hands-on activity is designing an infographic, poster, and brochure from Canva. Canva is a commonly used tool during my study at UVic, mostly for preparing an infographic to summarize a report. During the process of designing, I noticed that this form of multimedia requires a more effective use of words and images than PowerPoint due to limited space and its intended purpose.
The multimedia principles and theories that were used during this activity include the split-attention principle, where pictures and words are physically integrated into a poster/infographic to create the most effective combination. Personalization principle is also utilized where the style of such multimedia is often more casual and conversational rather than formal and academic. The signalling principle can also be shown with the use of different sizes and colours for different topics or headlines.
Below is an infographic on a brief introduction to Telehealth services in BC and the information on some service providers.
- Instructional Design
During my previous academic term, I enrolled in EDCI 339 in which I designed a mini-course as part of the final project. The process of creating the course, though only two small units, gave me a similar experience of designing instructional material with an emphasis on creating, achieving, and measuring pre-determined learning outcomes. I had the chance to think about how the learning objectives can be achieved effectively via a combination of instructional content and related hands-on exercise. Such experience has promoted my understanding of the different procedures of instructional design from an instructor’s point of view.

Hey Leo! Thanks for sharing that wonderful video on the potential Augmented Reality (AR) has within the education environment. It summarizes so many good points about AR such as increasing accessibility through our phone cameras, and visualizing concepts in three dimensions while students can interact with them in various applications. In the future, when it becomes more affordable, students can have a different learning experience that differs from watching lectures to potentially having a interactive learning where the uses their eyes and fingers.
I also really enjoyed your infographic on telehealth services in BC as it was such an important service that helped many people get healthcare advise, and information from healthcare providers without leaving their homes. Although not every visit should be done over the internet, somethings really can help patients not miss a day of work, or hire a babysitter for a day. Great work!

You covered a lot this week in your post! Glad you are working in Canva and it has been successful. EDCI 339 is a great class and one that gives you some great transferable skills too.
